Behind the scenes of a staged radio play- a blog post

November 8, 2018

I joined the University of Kent players a few years ago as a props master. Since then I have worked back-stage on numerous productions and enjoyed the hustle of being backstage. However, last year I was enticed into acting with the University of Kent Players first staged play, the Philadelphia Story, and decided to audition. As someone who has not acted before, the thought of line-learning has been daunting, however, knowing we would be using scripts for the staged radio play I was reassured.

Being cast as Tracy Lord in the Philadelphia Story was unnerving (Katherine Hepburn left big shoes to fill). However, the staged radio play had a relaxed, cabaret feel, the cast played around with accents and multiple characters, the foley created fun sound effects, the hosts interacted with the audience, there were a couple of quick improve moments, and lots of laughter.

We all had huge amounts of fun!

This year, I was unable to dedicate time to the performances but still wanted to get involved. So far i have helped in rehearsals when cast members are absent (playing with various accents), taken photos of the auditions, rehearsals and cast/foley in action for social media, and assisted with the marketing and ticket sales of the production. This will be our first performance in Mungos bar, so will be without a ticket office and will be managing our own ticket sales. We have been taking advantage of online tools such as eventbrite for selling our tickets. If this proves a success, we may be looking at other venues for future performances! Watch this space…

I am looking forward to watching the Scarlet Pimpernel at the end of this month. If you haven’t experienced a radio play, do come see the Scarlet Pimpernel. It’s great night out and a perfect start to the festive season.
